The aim of this zoom presentation is to examine the geomorphic process of erosion in a Coastal Environment. Giving teachers the opportunity to review the various investigations involved, develop fieldwork skills, which include careful observation, measuring and recording of information. With the opportunity to carry out some initial interpretation of the data recorded and how best to present the results.
The focus this year is on the process of Erosion, testing the hypothesis that erosion is an active process in the formation of one landform in a coastal landscape.
Area of investigation: Kilfarassy, Co. Waterford.
Investigations will include:
• Wave Survey
• Wind Speed & Direction
• Beach profile
• Beach Fabric
• Cliff Survey
• Field Sketch & Observations
Learning Outcomes:
Teachers will gain an understanding of a coastal landscape and the geo- morphological processes that formed it and continue to form it. In this instance – Erosion.
Gaining practical geographical investigation skills,
Learning how to carry out the investigations,
How to use the equipment involved
And understanding the aims of each task, in order to lead their own class Geographical Investigation and be able to share the skills and knowledge with their leaving cert students.
This includes:
• Observing
• Questioning
• Predicting
• Investigating and experimenting
• Estimating and measuring
• Analysing
• Recording and communicating
Tina Fogarty. I am a native of Co. Waterford, a graduate of UCC and hold an Earth Science Degree and a Post Graduate Certificate in Heritage Tourism. My expertise and interests include rocks, minerals, fossils, earth processes, earth history, mining history, biodiversity, erosion and environment. In addition to science,
To date I have successfully combined work in the jewellery profession and work as an earth scientist, which is mainly involved in education.
I have a wealth of experience working with schools and local communities as I have been working in out-reach since 2004, first with UCC, then as the Consultant Geologist for the Copper Coast Geopark where I built up a successful education and activities programme to cater for national and secondary schools, general public and families and for over fifteen years have been successfully leading Geographical Investigation Fieldtrips. I am also a Heritage Specialist with the Heritage in Schools Scheme where through fieldtrips and school visits I encourage both teachers and pupils to engage with their local environment and local heritage in an interactive, hands-on and meaningful way, with the focus on a fun discovery learning style, developing observational skills, and encouraging curiosity and imagination. And I am a Wildwork Facilitator with the SECAD Junior Wildwork Project for National Schools in Co. Cork.
